Mr. Walter
was born and raised in Freeman, South Dakota. He graduated
from Freeman High School in 1979. He attended and
graduated from
the University of South Dakota in 1985 with a Bacherlor of Science
Degree. He then attended and graduated from the University
South Dakota School of Law in 1989. He was licensed
and
admitted to practice law
by the Supreme Court of South Dakota in October
1989. Mr.
Walter worked for the
Minnehaha County Public Defenders Office in Sioux Falls, South Dakota
from 1989 to 1996. In 1996 he was admitted to practice in the
South Dakota U. S. District Court. He has tried many
misdemeanor
and felony cases. He held the record with the Minnehaha
County
Public Defender's office for the most jury trial wins until 2006.
Mr. Walter won every misdemeanor case he tried for 14 years.
He has won the majority of felony cases he has tried.
Since 1996, Mr. Walter has owned and
operated his private practice focusing mainly on criminal defense.
As stated in the Practice Areas link above, Mr. Walter has
handled a vast array of cases. Mr. Walter has been
contracted by
the Governor of the State of South Dakota and the Secretary
of
Corrections, from 1999 to the present, to assist inmates incarcerated
in the Sioux Falls, Springfield and Yankton prisons on various matters
including: Appeals, Habeas Corpus, Parole Issues, and prison conditions
etc.,
